This duo is a meeting between improvisers and jazz musicians Arild Andersen & Jonas H. Sjøvaag working together to create improvised stretches where Arilds extensive knowledge and experience meets Sjøvaag’s rhythmic musicality. With a percussion setup based on hand drums from the Middle East, tensions between, and auditory images across, genres and cultures are created when the sound of these drums meet Arild Andersens unique expression that stems from his background in Norwegian folk and jazz music. While some passages are based on composed melodies and other flows freely from a common starting point, the focus is on gentle interaction between two musicians, each with their own strong, personal voice.

Sjøvaag’s output has for many years been presented through ensemble Eple Trio, in Karl Seglem’s Acoustic Quartet and in various other ensembles, where he appears as a composer, arranger and drummer/percussionist. In this context, he takes one step to the side and presents a project where the inspirations are diverse, the soundscape is an extension and retrospective of the rich Norwegian music history where tradition meets improvisation.

At the same time the project itself is unique, new and exploratory; hence the title: Ancient Land, New Territory.

About Sjøvaag / Andersen

In this duo, Arild and Jonas work together to create improvised stretches of music where Arilds experience and folk music background fuses with Sjøvaags rhytmical musicality, sometimes based on composed melodies, sometimes floating freely from a common starting point.
The music range from melodical and soothing, often delving deep into dark, tight valleys of sound, before emerging on an eery plain where the crispness of Norwegian lyricism comes into full play.

Arild Andersen, one of Norways finest bass players with a carreer spanning more than 40 years, has been working since the late 60's with musicians such as Jan Garbarek, Karin Krog, Dexter Gordon, Sonny Rollins and Chick Corea. Over the last years Arild Andersen has also spent time investing the possibility of combining traditional Norwegian folk music with improvised music, and has, in short, been a part of too many projects to list here. If you need more information about Arild, visit his website here
